How do I make my Mac reconnect my headphones and switch audio to them automatically?
macOS reconnects some accessories on its own and chooses an output it thinks is best, which is not always the one you want. NearPair reconnects paired accessories when they come back in range, and makes an accessory you choose the output as soon as it connects.

Why the Mac does not always do it
Non-Apple accessories often connect to the phone they were last used with, and the Mac does not try again. When they do connect, macOS may keep playing through the speakers or a display, depending on the order devices arrived in.
Do it by hand
- Open Control Center → Bluetooth and click the accessory to connect it.
- Open Control Center → Sound and choose it as the output.
You repeat both steps every time you take the earbuds out.
Or let NearPair take care of it
Automatic reconnection brings paired accessories back without a card or a click. It waits two minutes after you disconnect something yourself, backs off when an attempt fails, and tries again once the accessory is heard nearby.
Choose an accessory for automatic audio switching and your Mac sends sound to it the moment it connects, however it connected. NearPair also remembers your listening volume for each accessory and restores it on reconnect.
- Reconnects when the case opens
- Audio switches to the accessory you choose
- Volume remembered per accessory
macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon. No account, no payment details for the trial.
Questions
Will it steal my earbuds from my phone?
It can if the earbuds support only one connection at a time. NearPair cannot see whether an accessory is busy with another device, so you can turn automatic reconnection off for any accessory.
Does it work with AirPods?
Yes. Automatic reconnection and audio switching work with any accessory your Mac has paired.
